How to Build a Career in Photography is a one-hour master class you can view online or on DVD, exploring the tools, equipment, marketing and logistics needed to create revenue from your photographs. No more guessing about the best way to photograph people. This course will instill techniques that are the very essence of people and portrait photography. Learn to analyze faces along with the technical, compositional and creative elements required to truly wow the subject with the results of the photography session. Produce images with impact, and images that people will love–a true measure of a successful photo, regardless of whether you create images for profit or pleasure. This course, taught by legendary photographers Jerry Avenaim and Gary Bernstein, presents easily-learned principles of lighting, posing, and composition that result in powerful “people pictures”. It gives every photographer basic tools from which to grow, experiment and create. 5 Lessons You’ll Learn 1. The psychology of working with people (which is critical regardless of whether you are making an image with the most expensive equipment or shooting it on your cell phone) 2. How to select and present your work to portrait clients, ad agencies and commercial clients 3. Strategies for pricing your work and securing clients 4. When to use natural light, when to use artificial light (and the relationship between the two) 5. Keys to composition and contrast control Every photographer (certainly every professional photographer) brings a different vantage to his or her art and its application. In this case, Avenaim and Bernstein designed this short yet abundantly detailed course to deliver specific critical techniques that not only please the subject of the photograph, but also the commercial client. Their frank approach is based on years of working professionally in the world’s toughest, most competitive markets. Upon venturing out on his own in 1985, his first assignment was a foreign edition Vogue cover of (then rising star) Cindy Crawford. Basing himself out of Milan, he began to work for Italian Vogue under the direction of Editor in Chief Franca Sozzani. With an already established fashion career, Avenaim moved to Los Angeles in 1992, where he is now based. Jerry began photographing celebrities and immediately fell in love with the genre. “I love actors and have such a great respect for the craft and its process.” Through the years, he has gained the trust of some of the most strong-willed celebrities. In the last decade Avenaim’s resume of megawatt stars reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood. Throughout his career Jerry Avenaim’s photographs have been seen in almost every major magazine worldwide, including Vogue, GQ, Glamour, Vanity Fair and Newsweek. His list of advertising clients has included, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Phat Farm, Guess, Ford Motor Co. , McDonalds, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. With the characteristic variety of mood and tone so evident in his fashion work Jerry Avenaim’s celebrity photographs organically combine the sensitivity and vulnerability of his subjects with his ability to bring out their often uninhibited and gregarious personalities. Be it a portrait of the exquisite Halle Berry, reminding the viewer Hollywood is still glamorous, or Dr. Phil with a full on grin for his first Newsweek cover, these photographs will always be remembered as the future photographs remain to be made. As a catharsis, Jerry Avenaim is also deeply inspired by what he calls his “soul cleansing” personal works. These include his book projects such as Naked Truth and One Mile Radius. Taken from the foreword of Naked Truth: “It is in Jerry’s work that his personality and character emerge. His images demonstrate the victory of what is seen over what is not seen. Rather, by what is said. These images, ultimately, reveal the warmth and humanity of a man whose work is his life-long passion…” Gary Bernstein For decades Gary Bernstein has created photographs for clients, among them more than 200 celebrities and a good portion of the Fortune 500 including Revlon, Avon, NBC, American Express, Cartier, Ford, Nikon, Swatch, HP, and Pierre Cardin. Gary has designed numerous celebrity marketing campaigns including Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion Perfume (for Elizabeth Arden and Unilever), Jay Leno for Frito-Lay, Sophia Loren Jewelry (for The Franklin Mint), Joan Collin’s Perfume (for Parlux Fragrances), Johnny Carson Clothing (for HartMarx Corporation), Farrah Fawcett (for Sassoon), and Jean-Paul Germain (the global “Winners” Campaign which included such icons as Rock Hudson and Natalie Wood). His still photographs have appeared on the covers or pages of most major magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Hello, Black Elegance, Paris Match, Hola, GQ, Architectural Digest and Popular Photography. Gary received a degree in Architecture from Penn State University, a Masters in Film from Brooks Institute, a Masters in Contemporary Art from The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., The Photographic Craftsman Degree from The Professional Photographers of America and The Gold Award from The Advertising Festival of New York City. Gary has published many books, with more than a half million copies in the worldwide market. His iconic coffee table book, BURNING COLD, a compendium of Bernstein’s photographs of Lena Harris featuring the prose of Elton John’s lyricist Bernie Taupin, was launched at the Nikon Gallery in New York City and is sought after by collectors worldwide. Gary lives in Southern California with his wife and children. Watch this course as many times as you like for an entire year. Learn anytime, anywhere, at home or on the go.
